Hip Hop Turns Up For President Obama's Farewell White House Jam
The presidency of Barack Obama is coming to its final days, but the transition wouldn’t be complete with one of the First Family’s legendary White House parties as they say their goodbyes. The Friday farewell jam featured the likes of hometown star Wale, Chance The Rapper, Solange Knowles, Usher, LaLa Anthony, J. Cole and several others.
According to a sweep of social media, Solange performed at the event and posted a photo of her soundcheck ahead of the performance. Wale and Chance are familiar faces at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and while cameras and cell phones weren’t allowed inside the party, most of the attendees documented the event via their respective pages.
Along with the aforementioned, Kelly Rowland, Chris Rock, Jay Pharaoh, John Legend and his wife Chrissy Teigen, George and Amal Clooney, Nick Jonas and Jill Scott were some of the other attendees for the private event.
“The sound check of life…Was truly the ultimate, ultimate honor. Can’t even put into words. Really. We will miss your excellence, your grace, and the phenomenal legacy you have let us all share,” wrote Solange in one of the few photos available from inside the event. Outkast College Course To Be Taught In Georgia
Savannah, GA – Armstrong State University in Savannah, Georgia will be offering an upper-level English class on Outkast and Hip Hop.
The course, called “OutKast and the Rise of the Hip Hop South,” will be taught by Professor Regina Bradley, Ph.D who promises that the class will focus on how “ideas about the South and southernness seep into other Southern writers,” Savannah Morning News reports.
Students will be challenged to analyze one of Big Boi and André 3000’s albums as well as projects from other Hip __hop artists with the intention to connect it with politics and contemporary movements like Black Lives Matter.
“Their final project is doing a paper that’s 12-15 pages…for what I call a ‘nerdy hip-hop review,’” Bradley says. “They’ll take an album of their choice — preferably an Outkast album — and give a discussion of the themes and what they hear.”
Savannah-born Big Boi acknowledged the upcoming course in an interview with Creative Loafing. “It’s an honor to be studied,” he says. “My aunt sent me that article two or three days ago. I am originally from Savannah, and I remember Armstrong, so that is just super dope.”
The course is slated to start this spring and naturally, is already full.
This isn’t the first Hip Hop course to make its way into the college classroom. Rice University employed an online “Religion and Hip-Hop Culture” course in 2015 and Bun B was even a working professor on campus in 2013. UC Berkeley also launched their own dedicated Hip Hop course focused on Tupac in 2008.

Mike Dean Skillfully Trolls Those Who Think He's An English Soccer Referee
Rather than offer continuous clarification, producer Mike Dean is taking full advantage of the fact that some people on social media have mistaken him for English soccer referee, Michael Dean.
The case of mistaken identity comes as the referee Dean faces scrutiny after dismissing West Ham soccer player Sofiane Feghouli for a challenge on Manchester United during a game held earlier this week.
Naturally, those upset with the move by Dean turned to social media to express their frustration, especially since the official has built a reputation for himself as the ref who gives out the most penalties in the Premier League.
Unfortunately, their criticism was mistakenly tweeted to Mike Dean, the Houston beatsmith behind records from Kanye West, Jay Z, Travis Scott and more.
