D’Angelo Wants More Artists To Invest Their Music In Social Issues

dangelo

Last Year, D’Angelo released his highly anticipated project Black Messiah. It was the first project that the soul artist has released in 14 years and, alongside Kendrick Lamar’s sophomore album To Pimp A Butterfly, became one of the most recognizable albums this year to speak on societal issues through its trackless. Although this may be a huge accomplishment for D’Angelo, he doesn’t want to be the only artist making socially charged music. In an interview with the New York Times, the Soul veteran spoke out about how there’s a lack of socially charged music in Hip Hop and music. He also included Kendrick as one of the artists actually making an album like Too Pimp A Butterfly. The article reads:

” Now more than ever is the need to sing about it and to write songs about it. And no one’s doing it. There’s only a chosen couple of people. I think it just takes one little snowflake to start a snowball to go down the hill. My contribution and say, Kendrick Lamar’s and some chosen others’ start the snowball. That’s all I can hope for. I don’t know if I’m comfortable being quote-unquote a leader. But I do realize and understand that my role as a musician, and in the medium that I am, that people are listening to me. Kids are listening to me. We have power to influence minds and influence lives. So I respect that power. I really do. I’m not putting myself on a pedestal or anything like that. I think that’s dangerous. When you start playing with that, and you’re not careful, you can get yourself into trouble.

Coming up, the music of my era was very conscious. I grew up on Public Enemy, and it was popular culture to be aware. People were wearing Malcolm X T-shirts and Malcolm X hats. It was a very cool thing to know who Malcolm X was. It was all in the lyrics. It was trendy to be conscious and aware. Now the trend … it’s just [expletive]. But to tell you the truth, there are a lot of people who feel the same way that I feel and that are making great music, conscious music. But for some reason or another it seems like the gatekeepers are not allowing that stuff to filter through to the mainstream. Kendrick Lamar, he’s an example of someone who is young and actually trying to say something. Who else? You got Young Jeezy and Young Thug. You know what I’m saying? It’s stupid. It’s ridiculous.”

You can read the rest of the NY Times interview here, where it also includes the first meeting between D’Angelo and former Black Panther Party co-founder, Bobby Seale.

Fetty Wap Talks Balancing Fatherhood, Bobby Shmurda And More

fetty wap instagram

Fetty Wap has rose to stardom overnight thanks to his catchy hit “Trap Queen.” Now he has gone from selling dope to digital singles and sat down with VIBE to reminisce about his humble beginnings and gush about his future.

As a rising rapper/singer that now calls his tour bus home, he says his fame is a “gift and a curse” because it keeps him from his two children.

“I used to see them every day,” the “My Way” rapper told VIBE. ” Now, my biggest fear is that my daughter is going to be crying because she doesn’t know who I am. Or she’s going to be crying because she’s happy to see me. She’s still young so she doesn’t really know what’s up right now. As a man though, that shit kind of hurts me. That’s my baby girl, my only daughter. What man don’t want their daughter to know who they is?”

He also spoke about 2014’s overnight star Bobby Shmurda, who is incarcerated at Riker’s Island on a slew of charges. Wap credited the Brooklyn spitter with helping him getting his career off the ground when he endorsed him via Instagram.

“Really, Bobby Shmurda reposted my song on Instagram first and made things really start to take off,” the 24-year-old said. “Then I think Rihanna posted it. Then I did the show with Kanye.”

The Paterson, NJ native also sympathized with Bobby’s unfortunate situation.

“We’re some young hood niggas that lived a certain lifestyle, and there’s consequences that come with that. Right now, he’s doing his time like a G. When that’s over, he’ll come back out and move on. Sometimes you can be far, far away from the hood and this type of shit still follows you. Really, I believe if you were a person known for violence — or every time you go somewhere someone’s gets shot and shit like that, then the cops will really be on you. At all my parties there don’t really be none of that shit. I don’t give the people the opportunity.”

“What I’m really doing is trying to give the game to the new artists and producers that want to do it the way the saw me do it, want to stay relevant the way I stayed relevant being independent,” Zay told AllHipHop.com “I came in the game without using a manager, without signing to a record deal. Talib Kweli Blasts Rachel Dolezal: ‘You’re An Enemy’

Talib Kweli3

While some do not have an issue with former NAACP chapter president Rachel Dolezal passing as a black woman for almost a decade, Talib Kweli is disgusted. After being outed as a white woman by her parents, Dolezal visited the Today show to break her silence had no problem she identified as a black woman and was not apologetic about deceiving people. In fact, she said she would do it all again if she could.

Kweli spoke with Rolling Stone to share his dismay with the situation. View an excerpt of his response below.

She’s said she identifies as black. Cool story, but that’s not a real thing – because at any time, she could go back. That is a privilege that people of color do not have. You cannot just jump back and forth between those worlds. It’s very disrespectful to the people of color that she claims to identify with to say something like that. When you say something like that, you are not identifying with us, at all, in any way, shape, or form.

I read that she sued Howard University in 2002 for discriminating against her for being white. She said she was denied a position because of her race, and that a professor there took her artwork off the walls because she was a white woman. To me, that exemplifies the worst aspect of this story. She tried to take advantage of the university by suing them, and then later she advanced her career by playing black. She has a history of taking advantage of the situation.

With all due respect to the NAACP, working with them doesn’t prove you’re not an asshole. They’re the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and we don’t even call ourselves colored people anymore. I saw NAACP people in Ferguson when I was down there, but I also saw that they were down with Donald Sterling. Anyone can start an NAACP chapter. So I don’t think that’s the best judge of her character.

Troy Ave Talks “Major Without A Deal” Album Sales & Getting 90% On Every Dollar (VIDEO)

Troy Ave

The Internet went in on Brooklyn rapper Troy Ave last week after reports began circulating that his latest album Major Without A Deal sold less than 4,500 units and 30 physical copies in its opening week. It was later clarified the digital sales numbers represented copies sold over only a three-day period, and the physical sales were actually illegal purchases since CDs were not supposed to go on sale until the following Tuesday.

[ALSO READ: Reports Troy Ave’s “Major Without A Deal” Album Only Selling 30 Physical Copies First Week Are Inaccurate]

Following the continuous bashing on Twitter over those low totals, Troy sat down with The Breakfast Club to talk about his new project. Of course, Charlamagne Tha God, DJ Envy, and Angela Yee brought up the uproar over his independent release.

“Basically it was like the ‘mom & pop’ stores had them, and if people came and asked for them early they was just giving them,” explained Troy “It was really this one store in The Bronx that sold the 30 copies. But shout out to them. They got my music out. I ain’t tripping.”

The BSB leader went on to express that he does not believe his sales equal a flop. According to Troy, being independent and apparently getting 95% of the revenue is a win for him, regardless of the final units sold.

“When you’re self-made and independent it don’t matter. You gotta get the slow grind. The [Jay Z] Reasonable Doubt grind. They gonna catch on later. And it’s gonna keep picking up,” Troy stated. “At the end of the day, I’m here to make money. I’m here to get the paper, and now I understand what Jay Z meant by ‘Can you really match a triple platinum artist buck-by-buck with only a single going gold?’ I can really match a platinum artist without even a single going gold.”

He added, “We’re getting 95%… no 90%. Five percent goes to my lawyer and then five percent goes to the distributor. But I’m so ill where I negotiated it where I need the distributor to pay 2.5 of my lawyer’s percentage. I pay the other 2.5. It’s all about having the leverage and doing what you want to do.”

50 Cent Threatens To Sue Website For Leaking La La Anthony’s “Power” Sex Scene (VIDEO)

50 Cent2

During an interview with The Breakfast Club in May, actress La La Anthony was very open about her upcoming topless sex scene on the Starz series Power. Ever since the former MTV VJ and reality show star let the world know she would be baring it all on screen, some people have been anxiously waiting to see Carmelo Anthony’s wife nude.

One website attempted to placate the waiting fans by leaking footage of the scene. It appears MediaTakeOut’s decision to jump the gun and release visuals from the forthcoming episode could be costly. Power executive producer 50 Cent posted an Instagram video threatening to sue the gossip site for leaking the Anthony content.

“Shout out to MediaTakeOut for showing La La some love and showing her scene early,” says 50. “For doing that, I’m not gonna take it personal, so don’t take it personal with me when they sue you til you’re blue in the face.”

The article has since been removed from MTO, but it is unclear if that will stop 50 or the executives at Starz from continuing with a lawsuit.

Lil B Explains James Harden & Kevin Durant Curse, Disses Chedda Da Connect, and Breaks Down NBA Finals Play With DJ Whoo Kid (AUDIO)

Lil B / James Harden

Lil B has pioneered the cooking dance, and a lot of Athletes and Artists have since adopted it. But this was ill-advised for Houston Rockets Shooting Guard James Harden. During Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals, Harden was cooking on the court and then dissed Lil B saying he didn’t know who he was. In fact this was false, and Harden fully knew what he was doing. Because of this, Game 3 was the start of the curse for the Rockets SG and Golden State went on to win the series.

The Bay’s own Lil B had called into DJ Whoo Kid’s show on Shade 45 (Sirius XM) this Saturday and lifted the curse off Harden. Listen as he explains why, and also warning other Athletes to be careful when performing the dance as they could have the same fate. Also he states why Kevin Durant still has the curse and why it won’t be lifted, and also takes stabs at Chedda Da Connect for swagger jacking with his single “Flicka Da Wrist”.

Lil B also thanks T.I. for showing love to the “Kevin Durant Diss” on Jimmy Kimmel. Then he later pays homage to Waka Flocka Flame, OJ Da Juiceman, and Gucci Mane for being pioneers. The interview is closed out with B’s predictions for the close of the series, and says that Eminem’s “Nail In The Coffin” is his favorite record.

Chris Brown and Karrueche Tran Clash Again on Instagram

Chris-Brown-and-Karrueche-Tran

When you things can’t get any worse between Chris Brown and his ex-girlfriend Karrueche Tran, they somehow seem to surprise us on a consist basis. Over the weekend, both Breezy and Tran had their opportunities to speak out the current status of their relationship. While Brown sounded a bit more positive about their relationship saying that he would “take it one day at a time” on On Air With Ryan Seacrest, Karrueche just wants both of them to at least be cool if they run into each other.

According to Complex, Chris Brown and Karrueche Tran seem to be at it again on Instagram after a recent Access Hollywood interview with the model was posted on theshaderoominc’s account. The singer commented on the brief clip with a long paragraph about how Tran shouldn’t be doing interviews about his life.

And that’s when Karrueche went off:

First off @chrisbrownofficial you just did an interview w Ryan Seacrest in which you spoke about me. My interview w Access Hollywood was not entirely about you.. they asked a question and as a mature adult I answered. I'm not gonna shy away from something that I lived through. I'm talking about my life and experiences. I'm not speaking on you or bashing you (like I easily could). Don't be mad at me because our relationship is over due to your lack of loyalty. You know what's weak?? You forcing yourself into my car.. my broken window.. blowing up my phone.. trying to shower me w gifts.. Man the fuck up and change the bs in your life like I've told you several times. Since you want to hear about my career – check out @vanityseries every Thursday on StyleHaul.com.. Emmy winning @thebaytheseries this Sept and 3 Headed Shark Attack on SyFy next month. Best of luck to you and beautiful Royalty ❤️

tyga

Tyga’s been going through a lot of financial troubles lately. Months ago, the”Rack City” rapper was served papers from his landlord for $90k. Now, Tyga is is being sued for sexual assault from Allisa Brown. Brown was a part of a 2011 music video shoot for Tyga’s single “Make It Nasty”, and some very crazy things happened according to TMZ:

“she claimed she was plied with alcohol, forced to appear topless on camera, and dry humped by some dude in a rabbit suit.”

The Tyga and Brown case came to a settlement for $50k, but Brown has only received half from Tyga in February. There hasn’t been response from the rapper’s party.

Rick Ross is such a nice guy.

When he was in jail earlier this week on some trumped up weed charges, he said he met some dudes. Well, those brothers don’t have the financial liberties that the Boss has. When the boss got out, he also posted bond for this undisclosed number of new friends.

That’s what’s up!

NAACP Releases Statement Supporting Rachel Dolezal

rachel dolezal

The NAACP has released a statement addressing the uproar surrounding Rachel Dolezal, the president of the Spokane, WA NAACP chapter who has been identifying as black but is actually a white woman. In their statement, they are offering support to Dolezal and standing by her.

Baltimore, MD – For 106 years, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has held a long and proud tradition of receiving support from people of all faiths, races, colors and creeds. NAACP Spokane Washington Branch President Rachel Dolezal is enduring a legal issue with her family, and we respect her privacy in this matter. One’s racial identity is not a qualifying criteria or disqualifying standard for NAACP leadership. The NAACP Alaska-Oregon-Washington State Conference stands behind Ms. Dolezal’s advocacy record. In every corner of this country, the NAACP remains committed to securing political, educational, and economic justice for all people, and we encourage Americans of all stripes to become members and serve as leaders in our organization.

Hate language sent through mail and social media along with credible threats continue to be a serious issue for our units in the Pacific Northwest and across the nation. We take all threats seriously  and encourage the FBI and the Department of Justice to fully investigate each occurrence.

Dolezal’s parents, Ruthanne and Larry, revealed to the media that they are white and so is their daughter. In an interview with the Spokesman-Review, they said that she had been pretending to be a black woman since 2006 or 2007.

Dolezal is currently under investigation to determine whether she violated a code of ethics when she identified herself as white, black and American Indian on an application for the  citizen police ombudsman commission, which she is the chair of.

MC Ren Livid Over Lack Of Inclusion In N.W.A. Movie Promotion

n.w.a. album art

MC Ren was an invaluable component to the success of N.W.A.’s success and without his lyrical contributions the group certainly would not have been as successful.

So when fans see the highly-anticipated movie being heavily promoted, Ren and DJ Yella are not well represented as a part of the controversial rap group’s history in the trailers.

Ren let his explosive views known on Twitter.

“When you have bitches work on a hip hop film that don’t know shit about hip hop this is what happens. How the hell u leave me out after all the work I put into them records,” Ren said. “It’s disrespectful to me, my family and most of all my FANS.”

The native Compton lyricist was particularly vital when Ice Cube left the group after their first album, Straight Outta Compton.

Ren did not offer any venom to the movie’s producers and former N.W.A. members Ice Cube and Dr. Dre. He also had nothing to say to acclaimed director directed by F. Gary Gray. How Ren and others are represented in the movie is not yet known.

The rest of his tweets are below.
