Jake&Papa Share Story About Girl Driving 5 Hours For Hotel Romp

Los Angeles, CA – With their brand new EP Tattoos & Blues fresh out of the oven, L.A.’s most underrated R&B duo Jake&Papa stopped by the HipHopDX offices for #DXLive to talk about the new album, what R&B means to them and argue with Trent, Jake and Marcel over who was the best 90s R&B group was.

On their lead single from the new EP “Hotel Lobby” the young crooners speak on a story of long distance infatuation that comes to fruition despite geographic barriers and leads to a night that plays out like an NSFW ad for an energy drink.

“The story that I’m painting here is about a situation that I had back in the Myspace days. I was building with a nice young lady across the country and it was everything through the DMs” Papa remembered. He continued, “Sex talk, likes, favorite colors, what we’re gonna do when I see you. Finally, I get there — boom. I hit Georgia. She lives in Atlanta and we were in Augusta. She drove five hours up there to come see a nigga and we locked ourselves in that hotel and it was just fucking amazing. It was one of those energy draining situations where you just step out the hotel the next morning like ‘fuck.’”

In addition to stories from the road the duo also offered some advice for our faithful #LitnessTest candidates from their own experiences drawing from their own arduous experiences from the early days.

“We may have had certain situations that didn’t work out but we’ve always stayed true, never gave up on each other and here we are now,” said Jake. Papa added, “We were in a group before this with our brothers. We had some minimal success, things seemed to be going pretty well and everything just came crashing down, it was over in the blink of an eye, the group was over and put it this way, group broke up in October we put out our first mixtape as Jake&Papa in May. We never ever stopped.”

Peep the full interview above, stream Tattoos & Blues down below and check out #DXLive every Thursday from 3pm-5:30pm PST.

BTY YoungN Killed In New Orleans

New Orleans, LA – BTY YoungN, a rising rapper out of New Orleans, was shot and killed over the weekend in his hometown. The 27-year-old artist was affiliated with Birdman’s Rich Gang outfit and had a promising career that was starting to pick up steam.

Local paper The Times-Picayune reports that the rapper born Desmone Jerome was gunned down on Airline Highway in Hollygrove, according to police reports. The paper states in its report that BTY YoungN was standing beside a Shell station gas pump when gun shots rang out at around 11:15 p.m., striking him several times. He was pronounced dead at the scene by investigators.

According to his mentor, Michael “Mista Maena” Patterson, BTY YoungN left his criminal past behind for his budding rap career. And according to accounts from friends, BTY YoungN was planning to meet with a lawyer to look over a possible contract with Birdman’s Cash Money Records imprint.

BTY YoungN’s court records were mentioned in the Times-Picayune report, which included a history of drugs and weapons arrests. In 2013, facing an attempted second-degree murder charge, BTY YoungN pleaded guilty and the charge was bumped down to aggravated assault.

This past January, DX featured BTY YoungN and GreatWhite Stylez’s “Mac & Brad” video.

Earlier this month, BTY YoungN connected with Calliope Bub for their 3 To The 17 mixtape. BTY’s last solo mixtape outing, 2nd Feed Up, dropped this past February and featured verses from Great White Stylez, Da$h, Jadakiss, and Hollygrove Keem among others.

A statement on the rapper’s Facebook account confirmed his death.

DMX Reportedly Checks Into Rehab

DMX Reportedly Checks Into Rehab

DMX has checked himself into rehab, according to TMZ.

The Ruff Ryders legend made the call after canceling a series of performances due to what was deemed a “medical emergency.” DMX reportedly entered the rehab facility voluntarily Thursday (April 28) in Southern California with the support of his manager, Pat Gallo, and his ex-wife, Tashera Simmons.

“It is important right now that he take some time off to focus on his health so that he can be a better father, friend and entertainer,” Gallo said in a statement. “We are eternally grateful for the outpouring of concern and support that has poured in. We ask that you please keep X in your prayers as he embraces your support.”

The Dog took the stage last week at the Ruff Ryders reunion show at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn where the show was littered with technical issues and some ramblings.

This is not DMX’s first trip to rehab as he’s battled substance abuse for quite some time.

Learn How To Freestyle Better With Rapping Card Game

Learn How To Freestyle Better With Rapping Card Game

Northeastern University student Jerry Spatch has created a card game that could really help any aspiring MC work on their freestyling ability.

Going off the top is something of a lost art these days, and Vers: The Rap Game is trying to bring it back. The game works by players drawing two cards — one theme card, and one card that has three rhyming words on it that a player must use. The game features 400 cards. We’re no maths geniuses but we’re pretty sure that comes to a whole lot of combinations — meaning the game should have a great shelf-life.

Spatch has set up a Kickstarter to help him produce the game, and he’s already halfway toward his target of $10,000. If you’re thinking about investing in the game, a pledge of $25 or more will get you a copy.

For a pledge of $3,000, Jerry will visit you (provided you live in the Continental US) and you’ll get some tea together.

Also, if the Kickstarter passes $100,000, Spatch Games promises to host a ballet that will be broadcast “to the entire world.”

Writing on the Kickstarter page, Spatch explained how he came up with the idea for Vers:

“I was tired of people in university saying I shouldn’t rap because it was unprofessional. Everywhere I went, when people heard about rap they’d think of a bunch of things that it wasn’t. So I made the game and it’s fun and silly and everyone can play it.”

This video gives an overview of how the game works:

Gucci Mane, 50 Cent & Kendrick Lamar Put On At Coachella Weekend 2

Gucci Mane, 50 Cent & Kendrick Lamar Put On At Coachella Weekend 2

Unlike the milder weather that Coachella audiences enjoyed during Weekend 1, this past weekend brought with it soaring heat, reaching 99 degrees in Indio, California by Saturday afternoon. The talent on the stage brought the heat too, as a relatively stacked line-up of Hip __hop acts gave solid performances — albeit dramatically less star-studded than the previous weekend. Drake didn’t bless Future’s set, and DJ Khaled, who was rumored to have Mariah Carey cued up for an appearance, only delivered Yo Gotti and Kent Jones as his guests.

Not to say that guests were a necessity to kill their sets. Travis Scott, who was seen wandering around holding hands with Kylie Jenner, entered the stage on a mechanical eagle and killed it for the second week in a row. New-Toronto chairman Tory Lanez performed solo, at one point crowd surfing the length of the audience while performing his hit “Diego.”

Gucci Mane did treat the audience to a respectable handful of guests during his set, which kicked off with “First Day Out The Feds.” He brought out Chief Keef, A$AP Rocky — who brought out Playboi Carti — and, as the biggest surprise, 50 Cent, who provided some throwback bars.

The crown jewel of the weekend, though, was Kung Fu Kenny, whose latest album Damn. had the highest sales total for an album’s debut of 2017 so far. For the second week in a row he rocked a solo set. With one slight change, the inclusion of “i” in place of “Mask Off,” he closed out the festival in style.

If you missed Coachella, and still want to catch Travis Scott and Kendrick Lamar this summer, Kenny just announced his North American tour, which kicks off in July.
